Seven Wonderful Conceptions - Mother's Day - By Pastor Delbert Young (sermon notes) Delbert Young (listen sermon audio mp3)
Scriptures: Genesis 25:21, Genesis 30:1-2, Genesis 30:22-24, Judges 13:2, Judges 13:3-4, 1 Samuel 1:7-8, 1 Samuel 1:10-11, 1 Samuel 1:20, Luke 1:7, Luke 1:13-14, Luke 1:18-20, Luke 1:24-25, Luke 1:63-64, Matthew 1:18
Today is Mother's Day. How many of us had a mother? Of course, we all did. We owe our very lives to our mothers. Mothers truly do lay their bodies and lives on the line to give us life. Amazingly, mothers desire to do that for us. This Mother's Day I want to talk about SEVEN WONDERFUL CONCEPTIONS. Every conception is wonderful, but the scriptures tell us about SEVEN WONDERFUL CONCEPTIONS from which we can draw some wonderful truths about mothers. Let's begin with Sarah.
1. SARAH. The Bible tells us about Sarah who was the wife and love of Abraham. Sarah did not become a mother until she was 90 years old and she and Abraham named their child Isaac and Isaac means 'laughter.'
[Genesis 21:6-7] Sarah said, "GOD HAS BROUGHT ME LAUGHTER, and everyone who hears about this will laugh with me." And she added, "Who would have said to Abraham that Sarah would nurse children? Yet I have borne him a son in his old age."
Being a mother is what truly makes a woman laugh. For her, it is the ultimate joy of life. God created Sarah to be "Mother." Everything else in life came under that #1 priority. Sarah was 90 years of age before she miraculously gave birth. All those years the desire to be a mother never left Sarah's heart. The desire to be a mother never leaves a woman. It is a part of their soul DNA. It is her #1 priority.
I was thinking about that powerful desire in a woman to be a mother and realized that even in the homosexual community that need remains true. They cannot conceive, so they do the next best thing. They adopt. The drive to be 'Mother' is that strong. Inside of every woman is that need. It is her #1 life priority.
2. REBEKAH. Another WONDERFUL CONCEPTION that the Bible tells us about is one concerning Rebekah, the wife of Isaac.
[Genesis 25:21] ISAAC PRAYED TO THE LORD ON BEHALF OF HIS WIFE, BECAUSE SHE WAS BARREN. The LORD answered his prayer, and his wife Rebekah became pregnant.
A woman needs her husband to pray for her especially when becoming a mother is difficult. The husband can pray in a way and touch God in a way that no one else can. Isaac prayed and Rebekah became pregnant.
Isaac was extremely wealthy. Rebekah had everything monetarily that she could possibly want, but Rebekah needed something more. She did not have her #1 need. She was not a mother. Give your wife roses, diamonds, houses, and cars. Give her everything. She deserves it, but nothing will satisfy her and make her happy as will giving her children and HELPING her be 'Mother.'
It was interesting that ISAAC PRAYED TO THE LORD ON BEHALF OF HIS WIFE BECAUSE SHE WAS BARREN. It was not a prayer for him. It was a prayer for her. It does not seem to have been as big an issue with Isaac to be a father as it was with Rebekah to be a mother. Men focus on conquering, success, and things. Women focus on mothering, not wealth and they need their husbands to pray for their motherhood.
3. Rachel. Another WONDERFUL CONCEPTION was Rachel, the wife of Jacob. In those times it was normal for a man to have several wives and even what the Bible calls concubines. A concubine would be a servant to a wife and came into the picture if the wife, let's say, had a headache or could not conceive. Rachel found herself in that situation. She could not become a mother. All the women around Rachel – her sister and the concubines – were becoming mothers, but Rachel could not. There was tremendous emotional stress and family tension.
[Genesis 30:1-2] When Rachel saw that she wasn't having any children, she became jealous of her sister. "GIVE ME CHILDREN, OR I'LL DIE!" she exclaimed to Jacob. Jacob flew into a rage. "Am I God?" he asked. "He is the only one able to give you children!"
The desire to birth children is that powerful in a woman. The inability of a woman to have children can cause emotional problems, jealousy towards other women, anger towards the husband, and even anger towards God. The desire to be 'Mother' is powerful.
[Genesis 30:22-24] Then God remembered Rachel; he listened to her and opened her womb. She became pregnant and gave birth to a son and said, "GOD HAS TAKEN AWAY MY DISGRACE." She named him Joseph, and said, "May the LORD add to me another son."
Though she may never say it, a woman sees it as a disgrace if she cannot be 'Mother.' God did give Rachel another son. His name was Benjamin and during delivery, Rachel died. Mothers are willing to literally lay their very lives on the line to give us life. Mothering is a powerful, powerful drive. Being 'Mother' is emotional and can bring a woman to the door of death.
4. Mrs. Manoah. Another WONDERFUL CONCEPTION is about a woman married to a man named Manoah. The Bible does not give us her name, so we will call her Mrs. Manoah. Mrs. Manoah could not be 'mother.'
[Judges 13:2] A certain man of Zorah, named Manoah, from the clan of the Danites, had a wife who was sterile and remained childless.
How heartbreakingly sad it is when I hear such reports. We all know of women who received such reports and observed the great physical extremes and expense they will go to so that they can be 'Mother.' One day all that changed for Mrs. Manoah as an angel of God appeared to her.
[Judges 13:3-4] The angel of the LORD appeared to her and said, "You are sterile and childless, but you are going to conceive and have a son. Now see to it that you drink no wine or other fermented drink and that you do not eat anything unclean…"
Even then, God was interested in prenatal care. A woman conceiving and carrying a child is like an angelic visitation. It is definitely supernatural and has to be of God. To go through what you women go through physically, mentally, and emotionally in the birthing process is beyond natural. Beyond that, for you to desire and look forward to going through what you go through must be ANGELIC. Come to think about it, there is something angelic about a woman about to become a mother. A woman desires to have this heavenly angelic experience that brings life. She glows. She is happy. She is angelic.
Mrs. Manoah did have a son and his name was Samson. His life was one of power and heartbreak. I cannot help but think about how Mrs. Manoah's heart broke repeatedly as she observed her son with so much potential, be captured, chained by his lusts, lose his vision, and crushed under a collapsed building.
Mother's know the potential of their children far better than the children or anyone else. Yet, children frequently go 'Samson' on her. Those she loves the most break her heart with their bondages, lack of vision for life, and allowing their worlds to collapse upon them and crush them. However, if possible, mothers will dig them and attempt to give them life again. Being 'Mother' is angelic, but also heartbreaking.
5. HANNAH. The Bible tells us about another WONDERFUL CONCEPTION. Her name was Hannah. Hannah was a beautiful loving woman. Sadly, people actually mocked and taunted Hannah because she could not have a child.
(NLT) [1 Samuel 1:7-8] Year after year it was the same - Peninnah would taunt Hannah as they went to the Tabernacle. Hannah would finally be reduced to tears and would not even eat. "What's the matter, Hannah?" Elkanah would ask. "Why aren't you eating? Why be so sad just because you have no children? You have me - isn't that better than having ten sons?"
You are a good man Elkanah. You provide well for Hannah, but Hannah will never be satisfied and completely happy with life until she is 'Mother.' And Elkanah, the answer to your question about your being better than ten children is, "NO! You are not better than ten sons." Hello! Wake up big boy! If you think that you are then you are in your own little fantasy world and you are not sensitive to her needs.
My wife loves me and is devoted to me. There is no doubt of that and she has proved that fact repeatedly. However, when it comes to her babies… Think about it. If you force a "good" woman (not a reprobate) to choose between her husband and her children, what will she do? She will protect those children and let you take care of yourself. That is not wrong or weird. That is how God has wired mothers. (I used the term reprobate previously. There is a serious problem if a woman simply abandons her children.)
I have heard many married couples (usually the husband) make this or a similar statement in marital counseling sessions: "We have a wonderful relationship until it comes to the children." Allow me to help the eyes of your understanding to be enlightened. In a "sort-of-a-way" you were only a step to her #1 purpose of life and that purpose was to have and provide for children. She may not have understood that at the time, but that is how God created her. Don't misunderstand what I am trying to say. She loves you and will continue to love you as long as you do love and care for the children, but when it comes to her babies, you are not more important, Elkanah. Look around. You will discover that her world does not revolve around you. It revolves around her children and/or grandchildren. She intends to spend the remainder of her life with you. She will make you happy. She will love you, take care of you, and help you, but she lives for her children. (I just had a thought that I have never had before. We tend to think that the Bible leans toward the use of women by men. That is not accurate, is it? It could just be the other way around.) Let's get back to Hannah. Hannah could not be a mother. She went to church and prayed at the altar.
[1 Samuel 1:10-11] Hannah was in deep anguish, crying bitterly as she prayed to the LORD. And SHE MADE THIS VOW: "O LORD Almighty, if you will look down upon my sorrow and answer my prayer and give me a son, then I will give him back to you. He will be yours for his entire lifetime…"
Hannah prayed and asked for a child. She made a vow promising to give the child back to the Lord. Isn't that what the Lord really wants from every mother? He wants to make certain you raise your child to serve the Lord. He has plans for your children and your children need to be in a place where they can learn those plans.
[1 Samuel 1:20] and in due time she gave birth to a son. She named him Samuel, for she said, "I asked the LORD for him."
Hannah became 'Mother.' It is amazing to me how some mothers can have a baby "at will." They conceive very easily. Yet, other mothers have to wait until it is due time. Hannah did not pray her prayer and that evening conceive. Hannah prayed and in due time she gave birth. My point is that we have to trust the Lord. Sometimes there is a due time. Do not make your wife chose between you and her children. You are very important, but she is created to be 'Mother.'
6. ELIZABETH. We find another WONDERFUL CONCEPTION in the Gospel of Luke. It is about a woman named Elizabeth who was married to a priest – a preacher – named Zechariah.
[Luke 1:7] They had no children because Elizabeth was barren, and now they were both very old.
One day while Zech was performing his duties in the temple, an angel appeared to him.
[Luke 1:13-14] But the angel said to him: "Do not be afraid, Zechariah; your prayer has been heard. Your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you are to give him the name John. He will be a joy and delight to you, and many will rejoice because of his birth…"
Zech had never ceased praying for Elizabeth to be a mother and that he would have a son. Never give up and never stop praying when you want a child. We never know what God may be doing. Remember that he has his timing.
Children are to be a joy and a delight. I realize that is not the case with some of us today. I hope that one day it will be. Our children are to my wife and me and have been nearly all of their lives. There have been few times when it was not that way and today we adore and depend upon them. They are truly a joy and a delight to us.
The remainder of the story about Elizabeth and Zech is amazing. Zech actually doubted the word of the Lord. Zech was about to mess the whole thing up with his words of doubt.
[Luke 1:18-20] Zechariah asked the angel, "HOW CAN I BE SURE of this? I am an old man and my wife is well along in years." The angel answered, "I am Gabriel. I stand in the presence of God, and I have been sent to speak to you and to tell you this good news. AND NOW YOU WILL BE SILENT AND NOT ABLE TO SPEAK UNTIL THE DAY THIS HAPPENS, because you did not believe my words, which will come true at their proper time."
Zech was about to go home and place doubt in Elizabeth. "I don't know Eliz. I'm getting old and maybe we are not supposed to have children. It will mess our lives up. I don't think we can take care of a child." Well, the angel Gabriel made certain that would not happen. HE SHUT DOWN ZECH. The Lord wants us to raise godly children that bring joy and are a delight to us and to the world. Never doubt that. Do not mess that up with your words. Never allow negative things to come out of your mouth about your children. Never call them "dumb," or say things like "You will never amount to anything." Shut your mouth Zechariah! If you will not then I will shut you down says the Lord. Listen to the Lord concerning children. THEY ARE A JOY AND A DELIGHT. Elizabeth got the message and guarded her mouth.
[Luke 1:24-25] Soon afterward his wife, Elizabeth, became pregnant and went into SECLUSION for five months. "How kind the Lord is!" she exclaimed. "He has taken away my disgrace of having no children!"
Get away from negative people with negative words for your children's sake. Elizabeth's words were completely different. A short while later, John the Baptist was born and Elizabeth became 'Mother.' In addition, Zech did get his speech back when he got his mouth right.
[Luke 1:63-64] He asked for a writing tablet, and to everyone's astonishment he wrote, "His name is John." Immediately his mouth was opened and his tongue was loosed, and he began to speak, praising God.
Often good things do not happen in our lives because of the way we speak to the children that God has given us. Speak good things.
7. MARY. We will look at one more WONDERFUL CONCEPTION. In fact, it is a CONCEPTION that is MORE WONDERFUL than is any other. It is, of course, Mary, the mother of Jesus.
[Matthew 1:18] Now this is how Jesus the Messiah was born. His mother, Mary, was engaged to be married to Joseph. But while she was still a virgin, she became pregnant by the Holy Spirit.
Mary was a very young woman. How old do you think she may have been? Let's say 15-19. She had found favor with God, but she was not married and pregnant in a very religious society. Imagine the mockery that Mary experienced. Imagine the mockery that her parents and family experienced. Imagine trying to explain to her parents, family, and to Joseph (husband to be). Yet, inside of her was the greatest child imaginable.
Perhaps you or someone you know experienced that. I know that young pregnancies are frowned upon and, for the most part, rightly so. However, even in that, we must trust God and somehow see God's favor. We must be good parents and guard our children. However, even in the best parents have situations. Sometimes God has a plan that does not fit into our mentalities. I want to encourage you if you are a loved one has experienced this. God still has big plans for you and your child. That young mother still has favor with God.
One more point today. God not only chose Mary to mother Jesus. He also chose Joseph to discipline, train, and be an example for Jesus. My point is that an important part of mothering is the selection of a father. The selection of a husband by a woman must include the ability of that man to be a great father for the children of whom the mother is willing to sacrifice her life.
A woman's #1 desire and joy is to be 'Mother.' It is LAUGHTER to her. Wealth is good and appreciated, but what she wants is to be 'Mother' and her husband to pray for her and help her mother. It is an extremely emotional time of which she will lay down her life to be 'Mother.' She desires the angelic experience of bring life into the world and accepts and expects the heartache. Never force her chose between you and her children. You may not like the answer. Mothers need to guard the words spoken to them and their children. Mothers have the favor of God, even very young mothers. Mothers must carefully select the father of their children. The best thing I can do for my wife is help her be the mother God created her to be.
